Ah, summer. 5 questions for the season

June 22, 2018 by Jo Leave a Comment

1~ Did you know you can freeze watermelon?  Well, I was watching a cooking show where the host was freezing watermelon balls then whirring them up in a blender to make some sort of delicious cocktail.  Then a few days later, I knew I would not be able to eat all the watermelon I had cut up for family dinner.  Since I usually freeze leftover fruit, I tossed the chunks into the freezer container to add to my breakfast smoothie. It’s delicious.

2~Do you hall sprinklers from one part of your lawn to the other?  Ever leave one running all night because you missed hearing your timer ring?  (#metoo! pretty sure this not how this hashtag was meant to be used, going rebel and doing it anyway)  10+ years later, I am still so happy when I hear water rush into the pipes and the yard sprinklers come on. It was worth every penny to have them installed.

3~ Need a summer idea? When the heat gets to much you can always head to the city park with your bag of rollers.  I guess this is what Montana locals do as Honey and I witnessed first hand a woman sitting in her beachside lawn chair rolling up her hair in color coated  curlers.

Just to clarify: this is NOT me. I could never do this without a mirror!

4~ Need a laugh out loud movie?  Don’t miss a chance to see the movie Book Club while it is in theaters.  If your over 40 I think you’ll find it funny.  If your over 50 I think you might laugh out loud.  Take a friend too, because giggling in a movie theater is way more fun when you are next to a girlfriend.

5~ Do you every rush through one thing so you can get to the next thing sooner?  For this summer, I am going to try and be right here, right now so I can savor every last warm night, every delicious Rainer cherry, every giggle, every laugh, every pink sky.

Because, summer.  Hello Seattle, you shine brightest during the summertime.

Is it all perspective?

December is Seattle’s rainiest month. Half the time, the city receives 5 to 8 inches of precipitation for the month.

Yes, the Daffs look a little soggy.  It’s raining here.  I meant to snap a photo yesterday when it was dry.  I heard a news clip saying something about lots of rain and records being broke.  I tried to look it up this morning because I just wasn’t feeling the crush of a low, hanging gray sky like I have in the past.  Spoiler alert, if rain depresses you, don’t look up Seattle averages.  For 2015 we were 7 inches about the average and most of those extra inches of rain accumulated in December.

Here’s the thing; I have lived here my whole life.  I feel like I have seen more Seattle blue sky in the last 12 months than I ever have in any 1 year period.  I think it is true, but when I look at the weather stats, I question myself.  Maybe it is just the way the rain has fallen.  Somedays I am running into the Y, hood up, trying to quickly escape the pelting drops.  That same afternoon, I drive along in glorious sunshine, with blue skies mixed in with the fluffy white clouds, trying to remember the morning rain as my wipers squeak across the dry windshield. Has the weather pattern changed where we get more rain all at once, instead of that never ending drizzle that seems to go on for days?

I’m not sure. And then I look out my window and see the daffodils blooming.  They make me smile. Maybe in the past I have been so grumpy about the rain I never really appreciated the patches of blue sky we do get. I am trying to adopt a motto of one of my Y friends, ‘don’t squander a sunny day’.  However, most days my to-do list is long and I don’t have a whole day to take off and be outside.  So instead I am trying to appreciate a sunny moment, feel the sun on my face, the bright in my eyes. And, try not to notice my windows are dirty.

Are you a fair weather fan?

November 2, 2015 by Jo 2 Comments

sounders, hawks, dawgs win

It was a great weekend to be a Seattle sports fan.  All of our local teams brought home a win.  Honey and I have spent years (and a lot of our entertainment dollars) going to football games, soccer matches and the occasional baseball game.  One huge benefit living close to a major city; any weekend you can generally find professional sports, musicals, live music, plays, great new restaurants to try.

A few years ago, when the Seahawks became serious NFL contenders, the energy in the Seattle area was contagious.  Pop up vendors starting selling Seahawks gear at the gas stations. 12 man flags starting flying from office buildings, houses and cars.  Local businesses strung blue and green lights around their buildings. Though most of the talk was about the most recent win, some long time fans became disgruntled. They complained that you were merely a fair weather fan if you hadn’t cheered on the Hawks through the losing seasons.

I admit, sometimes I’m that fan. I like to see winners win. Some seasons it gets old watching your team lose game after game.  So this week I am celebrating the wins of the weekend and I am going to ride the Seattle sports high. Go Dawgs!  Go Hawks!  Go Sounders!
