What I am loving January 2016

I’ve been meaning to write this post for about a week. So yesterday I figured I better type it up because I am sure for February I will have a whole new list of likes.

First, have you seen the movie Bridge of Spies with Tom Hanks? I saw it a couple of weeks ago. Here was the note I jotted down: ’the power of one to follow their dream instead of what they are told, the power of one.’ I found the message inspiring. Then this weekend, Honey and I were cruising our local Red Box selection and here’s what he said, “isn’t that the movie where every time I woke up Hanks was in the same room talking?” Apparently it didn’t have quite the same impact on him. And for the record, generally I am the one who sleeps through movies.

Next, I have a question for you ladies. Do your footie style socks slide down and bunch under your heal when you walk? I have tried many styles of no-show socks (as documented here) and all have this same problem. Recently I started using an inch of  fashion tape on the back of each sock. This works brilliantly to keep them place. It takes an extra sixty seconds to get ready, but so worth it. I wish I could just go barefoot in shoes. However, my feet get sweaty and I then I would have to deal with blisters instead of bunching. Ouch.

Moving on. How about podcasts? For the reader who might not know, a podcast is like a weekly talk show you tune into to hear. Only you don’t tune in, you download and play it. I use the native Podcast app on my iPhone and Ipad. Have you listened to Happier with Gretchen Ruben? I find her topics interesting and formed a girl crush on Drew Barrymore after listening to episode 44. Now Drew’s a woman with joie de vivre. Seriously, I want her to be one of my girlfriends. What are you listening to? Share them in the comments below. I am always looking for new ideas.

What are you loving right now?

Sometimes, enough is enough

What if the high water mark is just that, the high? And the rest is more about the marks left over time. The ocean isn’t any less significant because it only once reached over the sea wall. Your actions are not any less significant when you did your best when tired, sick or just plain sick and tired. Or maybe you were feeling weary, worn out, bored, indifferent or sad and lonely. Being on our best behavior means something different every time we step out.

Because sometimes just good enough is really just that; good enough. I know I mentioned this in the last post. However, it is worth repeating. Small actions over time can add up to something significant. It may not be the top of our game, but we can move forward with what we have to offer today.

Here’s what Winston Churchill had to say on the matter.  Oops, I might be dating myself.  Some of you might not even know of Churchill.  He was the Prime Minister of the UK in the 40’s and again in the 50’s. He said, “Success is not final, failure is not fatal: it is the courage to continue that counts.”

He also said, “never, ever, ever, ever, ever give up.”

Small changes, over time, can make a difference.

We have had amazing weather this last year in the Pacific Northwest.  I have joked that if our blue skies and warm days are a result of global warming, then bring it on.  I swear this afternoon my bedroom felt brighter and lighter than yesterday and the day before that.  It might have something to do with this being the first winter with our new white doors and window frames all through the house.  It was so worth the effort.  As I mentioned in an earlier post, I spent hours, days and weeks with a paint brush in my hand.  I think I might have to write a how-to on my efforts as I am sure I am not the only one that has a home full of contractor 90’s golden oak.

Back to global warming.  Well, not exactly.  I know I am ignorant on this topic.  I recently read an article on Leonardo DiCaprio.  Now there’s a face that can talk about our planet and I might listen.  Or at least watch.  Especially if he shaves off that Revenant beard. He mentioned in the article that in between filming scenes he would sit around and chew his facial hair.  Gross.  Anyway, after reading about his passion to eliminate the use of fossil fuels I looked out my window and was again grateful for the blue peaking through the clouds.

I love this planet, too.  I hope to see more of it in the coming years.  I recycle all I can so I contribute less to the landfills. I use compost bought from the local company who recycles our yard waste. I have even bought ladybugs and red worms to cut back on the chemicals used in my yard.

Admittedly, these are small contributions.  Even though I have a water filter and even though I make every effort to recycle the bottles, I still buy cases of water and some end up in the garbage.  I have thrown old underwear in the trash.  (It’s embarrassing to think about the workers at Goodwill pulling them out of the bag. And who wants them?) Even though I pull cans & bottles out of the trash after a party, I leave behind the used paper plates and napkins.

Here’s the thing. We got rid of the trash compactor in the kitchen update because we just didn’t need it. What was once the size of the garbage can is now the size of the recycle bin.  Probably at your house, too. That feels good. All the little efforts we make add up.  Let’s celebrate that and leave the planet saving to Leo.

What will you leave behind?

What is your favorite salad dressing?
What is your favorite salad dressing?

When my mom passed away suddenly, my brothers and I were left to make decisions about what do with all of her stuff. My mom seemed to have a lot of things saved for ‘just in case’. Just in case she ever needed a small cardboard jewelry box lined with cotton batting, she had 3 dozen ready and waiting, tucked in a large plastic bin in the back of her closet. She had saved a ball of rubber bands so big we probably could have strung them all through her neighborhood. In her pantry were 3 unopened boxes of aluminum foil. The odd thing about that was she microwaved all of her leftovers and probably hardly ever used foil. Under the sink, cleaning products were stock piled. There was more food frozen in her freezer than any single person could eat in a year. The dates on the packages proved it.

That was a weird week. It felt voyeuristic to be sorting through her life, discovering treasures, throwing away possessions, dumping containers of juice and cottage cheese down the sink. Stacked up in the corner of her guest room were a couple hundred picture frames filled with the faces of us. She had saved them  all. Of course since we had given them to her, our milestones, no one wanted or needed another copy. They were all there; baby, school, graduation and weddings.

Its been over 3 years and hardly does a day go by that I don’t open up a drawer, closet or cupboard and think, “if my daughter had to clean this out today what would she find, what would she have to throw away, give away, discard?” Even though I make several trips a year to the goodwill, I still find myself holding on to things for the ‘just in case’. Stock piling and keeping items that I just might need for some future unknown. I still have a box of her letters I can’t quite seem to put in the recycle. They mean little to me, other than that they meant something to her.

One of the first things I came across that rainy fall week were over a dozen plastic shower caps. You know, the disposable kind brought home from a hotel? Here’s the thing: they were in MY bathroom drawer. Yep, rarely do I jump in the shower and not wash my hair, but there they were. That day I glanced over at the shower and there was a used one hanging over frame. That day I started cleaning out my stuff, little by little. That day I decided to quit bringing home more shower caps.

It’s hard to change old habits. Earlier this year I cleaned out my sock drawer. I donated nearly 20 pairs and still have more than I need in any 2-week timeframe. I’ve tried to adopt the philosophy of clean it out instead of organize it. I really don’t need a milk crate sized bin full of spare shower caps tucked in the back of my closet. I know for sure my daughter doesn’t want them.

I’m trying to use up the items in the pantry and fridge BEFORE I buy more food. I’m trying to get rid of a pair of jeans if I buy a new pair. I’m trying to surround myself with things that bring me joy instead of hanging onto items that don’t.

Then there’s the salad dressing. I never understood a snarky comment my mom had made about all of the salad dressings in my refrigerator being crap. It was an insult she flung at me as she left my house one night. I didn’t know what she was talking about. It was probably something leftover from a potluck. But as we emptied her fridge, bottle after bottle of the ‘good stuff’ was lined up on the counter.

PS-turns out I have at least a 3 year supply of shower caps. And, now what do I do with all the matchbooks now that no one smokes?
